Walter Whitman Wilkins II, lovingly known as “Whit,” 71, of Lafayette, passed away on February 22, 2026, surrounded by his family.
Born on May 31, 1954, Whit lived a life defined by hard work, devotion to family, strong faith, and unwavering loyalty. A skilled electrician by trade, he was known for his steady hands, sharp mind, and willingness to help anyone in need. He took great pride in providing for his family and carried himself with quiet strength and determination.
Whit was a passionate sports fan. He faithfully cheered on the Indiana Hoosiers men's basketball, the Nebraska Cornhuskers football, and the Golden State Warriors. Game days were serious business, and he loved the energy, loyalty, and tradition that came with being a devoted fan. He was also famously an avid Mountain Dew drinker. It was a small but unforgettable trademark that will always bring a smile to those who knew him.
Faith played a central role in Whit’s life. As a devoted member of his church, he found strength and fellowship in his spiritual community. His values showed in the way he treated others — with steadiness, honesty, and quiet love.
Above all, Whit cherished his family. He is survived by his sons, Nathan Scott Wilkins (Vanessa) and Bryan Chad Wilkins; his 10 beloved grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren, who brought him immense pride and joy. He is also survived by his siblings, Vicki (Bill) Burnett, Nancee Kehr, Alan (Beth) Wilkins, and Cindy (Joe) Kincaid, along with many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Whitman Wilkins I, and his mother, Vallie Anne Wilkins.
A fellowship will be held on Thursday, February 26, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Whitehorse Christian Center, followed by a Celebration of Life ceremony at 6:00 p.m. Family and friends are invited to attend and honor his memory.
