In the early morning hours of Saturday August 16th 2025, after receiving his final goodbyes from his children, Richard “Rick” Edward Nelson, 78, of West Lafayette, went to meet the Lord he so faithfully served after a life devoted to sharing God’s word to those who need it most.

Rick was born on August 12, 1947, in Newark, New Jersey, to the late Harold and Hannah (Wolff) Nelson. Young Richard attended catholic school most of his childhood. After graduation from Battle Ground High School, Rick enlisted in the United States Army and served as Postmaster General for five years until he was honorably discharged.

Following his military service, Rick worked hard to raise his daughters as a roofer and contractor. He eventually retired after nearly 15 years of working for Reese Wholesale in Lafayette.

Rick was married to Helen Christine Hughes in Indianapolis and went on to have three daughters in addition to his son and step daughters. After divorcing, Richard moved his daughters from Indianapolis to West Lafayette to care for his father Harold until his passing.

Rick was a member of American Legion Post 492 and the Christian Motorcycle Association (CMA), where he served as chaplain. Rick was well known for his rough exterior allowing him to volunteer in various rehabilitation centers, jails and shelters sharing his journey to salvation and God’s word, guiding those who had lost their way toward hope and redemption as he once had. Rick loved volunteering any free time for fundraisers on his motorcycle, blessings of the bikes, playing his harmonica, telling stories, cooking and was always happiest when surrounded by his children, church, dogs and friends. In his final years Rick’s youngest daughter was dedicated to her father’s happiness and wellbeing providing him with everything he would never ask for and endless puppy snuggles. He often spoke with pride and gratitude for the woman she had become—selfless, brave and strong.

Rick is survived by his children: Eric Nelson, Amanda (Bruce) Barker, Emily (Patrick) Kidwell, Brittany Nelson and her and partner, Emma Douglas who was also Richards beloved caretaker; and his nine grandchildren: Cooper Hale who Rick beamed with pride for his service in the Marine Corp: Cooper is active duty and deployed overseas just a few days before Rick’s passing allowing them a final farewell. Alannah Stout, Jet Truitt, Layla Pitts, William Pitts, Elliette Kidwell, Ivy Kidwell and Xaiver Swim.

In addition to his parents, Rick was preceded in death by his stepdaughter, Melissa Murdock, and brother, David Nelson.

Rick will be missed by his family and the many friends he has made along his journey to meet the Lord. Christmas just won’t be the same without Rick’s Santa beard and belly bouncing chuckles.

A celebration of life will be held for Rick at Harvest Chapel (2028 S 22nd St, Lafayette IN 47906) on September 6th from noon to 2pm. Arrangements have been entrusted to Comfort Cremations, 674 N. 36th St., Lafayette, IN 47905 | (866) U-R-Loved | www.comfortcremations.net
