Michael James Schimmel, age 73, passed away peacefully at his home on October 20, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, family devotion, and a passion for life's open roads.

Born on June 30, 1953, in Terre Haute, Indiana, Mike moved with his family to Lafayette, Indiana, in 1963. He was a proud graduate of the Jefferson High School Class of 1972. Following his graduation, Mike entered the workforce at Fairfield Manufacturing. In 1980, he transitioned to the local cable company, beginning a dedicated career in the industry. Through decades of organizational changes and buyouts, Mike remained a reliable fixture in the business, ultimately retiring from Xfinity after 35 years of service.

On May 24, 1980, Mike married the love of his life, Joyce Merrell, building a beautiful family and a life filled with shared adventures over their many years together. He was a devoted family man who loved taking vacations to Disney World with his daughters as they were growing up, a tradition they cherished so much that they continued making trips together well into their adult years. An avid enthusiast of the open road, he loved riding his Harley Davidson motorcycles. He also had a deep appreciation for rock music, traveling with his wife and family, and attending the Indy 500 and many other sporting events.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Leah Peffley, Richard Peffley, and James Schimmel, as well as his brother, Gary Schimmel.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Joyce Merrell-Schimmel; his devoted daughters and grandchildren: Jessica (Adam) Deetz and their children, Adam Deetz II (AJ) and Avery Deetz; and Angie (Adam) Hedden and their children, Lucas Schimmel, Madison Hosler, and Peyton Hedden. He is also survived by his loving sisters and brother, Julie (Craig) Hufford, Jackie (Victor) Cole, Kelli (Dennis) Holland, and Kurt (Lori) Peffley, along with several nieces, nephews, and a lifetime of dear friends.
