Williamsport

John “Jack” Cooper, 89, of Williamsport passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, January 9, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was born February 3, 1935 in Terre Haute to John and Mary Knight Cooper. He married the love of his life on April 14, 1961.

Jack worked at Harrison Steel for 41 years, retiring in 2006. He wore many different hats while working there, including: flame washer, scrap truck driver, and sweeper operator.

Jack loved to be outside mowing the grass, tending to his garden, picking fresh blackberries, trimming tree branches, and sitting on the front porch watching the traffic pass by. He loved having his grandkids and great grandkids at his house, telling them stories about his childhood and drawing with them, as well as attending all their sporting events. Jack enjoyed spending all his free time with his beloved wife Jo (his pride and joy). He loved his sweet tea, a good bologna sandwich with mustard, and any type of ice cream. Jack also enjoyed working in his wood shop, building different things for his family and restoring antique furniture. Throughout his life he had many dog companions that he loved very dearly. Jack enjoyed watching NASCAR races and collecting NASCAR racecars, with a few of his favorites being Dale Earnhart Sr and Dale Earnhart Jr.

Jack is survived by his wife of 63 years, Charlene Jo Cooper; three children: Jackie (girlfriend Mechelle) Cooper, Brian (Linda) Cooper, and Tammy (Thom) Shoaf; one sister: Mamie Knight of Arizona; six grandchildren: Courtney (KW) Rice, Aaron (Ashley) Cooper, Austin (Brittani) Cooper, Daniel (Cheyenna) Shoaf, Ashley (fiance Josh) Cooper, and Hailey Vollmer; six great grandchildren: Calleigh and Kinzi Rice, Braxton, Ella, and Addi Cooper, and Izaiah Vollmer.

He is preceded in death by his parents and five brothers: Robert, Vernon, Albert, Ronald Keith Paul, and Charles “Chuck”.

Per Jack’s request, the family had a private gathering during his final days and there will be no formal ceremony. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Comfort Cremations, 674 N. 36th St., Lafayette, IN 47905 - (866) U-R-Loved - www.comfortcremations.net
