Dr. John Joseph Deely, 92, born January 13, 1933, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Nicholas Deely and Elvira Steele, passed away peacefully at home on January 17,2025, in West Lafayette, Indiana.
John led an extraordinary life as a Professor of Statistics. He earned his PhD and a masters degree at Purdue and an Electrical engineering degree from Georgia Tech. His academic career spanned continents, marked by collaborations with colleagues worldwide and significant contributions to his field, through numerous publications. His time in court as an expert witness. For 28 years, John lived in New Zealand, teaching at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch. He later returned to Purdue University, where he continued his passion for teaching statistics until retiring at the remarkable age of 85.
On April 25, 1997, John married Elizabeth "Ann" Young, and they shared 35 cherished years together. He is survived by Ann: six children and their spouses, from his first marriage to Anola: eight grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two stepchildren: two step grandchildren,: and a half -brother.
John's love for teaching was unapparelled. His dedication to education and his vibrant intellect, left an indelible mark on those who had the privilege of knowing him. Beyond his professional achievements, John treasured the life he built with Ann and the joy they found together.
At this time no service will be held. May John's memory bring comfort to all who knew him and inspire future generations in the pursuit of knowledge.
