June 24, 1954 — December 27, 2024

Lafayette

Charles William Root (Our Chucky), 70 of Lafayette, known for his humor, generosity, Die-hard Ohio State fan along with his field buddies, who will celebrate his life on the field, playing trivia and Family Feud, and always taking care of his family back and forth between Indiana and Ohio passed away peacefully with his wife by his side on December 27, 2024. Chuck was born on June 24, 1954, the son of Eleanor Fay and Horace William Root of Johnston.

He graduated from Maplewood High School in 1972 and attended Kent State University. Chuck was the hardest worker and could figure anything out. He loved farming and worked at Dico Plastics, Venture Plastics, oil fields, Sajar, Caterpillar, and Wabash. Chucky took great pride in his work. He always helped with any home improvement project including remodeling, floor laying, electrical, drywall, truly a man of many trades, and he mowed the whole neighborhood.

Chuck’s unique kindness, orneriness, and humor made a forever impact on his family, friends, and neighbors. “Saying that he would give you the shirt off his back is an understatement, he would fill the pockets with cash first.” Chuck continues to give by being an organ donor. His friends tell many stories of his younger years including red flashing lights and a paint job, tailgating and Hooters. His family has memories of firecrackers and having to jump out of a tree on fire and family vacations.

Charles was preceded in death by his mother, Eleanor, father, Horace and brother, Robert Root.

He leaves behind his wife, Debra Kay, (Indiana) siblings, Nancy Root (Ohio) and Carol Root Koupas, (Florida) nephew, Bransen Root, (Ohio) his daughters, Patricia Kemp (Dee Dee), (Ohio) April Lawhorn, (Ohio) grandchildren, Devin KJ, (Indiana) Michael Kemp, (Ohio) Dravyn Gibbs-Lawhorn, (Illinois) and Pacey Kay, (Ohio) and his great grandchildren, Kalliope and Michael, and his best buddy, Winky Blinky Snickers.

A celebration of life will take place in Cortland, Ohio.
